The fairest of them all...

Hey guys,
I thought I would do a post about something that I've found really hard to come across, pale foundations. I am really quite ghostly pale, (I prefer the term 'english rose', sounds alot nicer!), and I like to embrace my natural colour. Having worn makeup for about 6 years now, I've tried a fair few, (no pun intended!), foundations, most of which are too yellow, orange, or just dark for my skin.

I've recently found Bobbi Brown's foundation shade, Alabaster, which has been a life saver for me, but it is a shame that when I branch out and try other brands, I tend to be disappointed by their shade range. I've heard Nars do some good pale shades, and also Dainty Doll by Nicola Roberts, if anyone has any other recommendations, please do let me know! I was looking into buying an Illamasqua foundation, with them being a brand that boasts a wide colour range, but to get the right shade for me, I would have to mix two together, and who has time for that every morning?! Plus, it would get pretty expensive. I've also tried making some of the foundations a bit paler by mixing with pure white foundations, but that only really works with liquids, and it's so time consuming!

I thought I'd do a quick comparison of some foundations I've got at the moment, all in the palest shade.
From left to right, top to bottom, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7

  • 1-Rimmel Stay Matte in 001 Ivory. This is the darkest of the bunch, and just nowhere near pale enough! With the gorgeous Lily Cole as their model, you'd think there would be paler shades!
  • 2-Mac Studio Fix Fluid in NW15. This one is just so orange on me! I know this really suits some skin tones, but it's not for me. I was (very) wrongly colour matched as this shade instore!
  • 3-Revlon Colourstay in 110 Ivory. It's such a shame this one doesn't quite match me, as the formula is amazing! This is slightly pinkish for me.
  • 4-Clarins Truly matte foundation in 02 Pale Ivory. Really nice foundation, just slightly too dark.
  • 5-Mac Studio Sculpt in NC15. Definitely a closer match to me than NW15, but this is my most recent foundation purchase and I haven't actually tried it out properly yet. It looks a little darker than the foundation I currently use which is number 6.
  • 6-Bobbi Brown Foundation stick in Alabaster. This is the most perfect match I've found so far, and I love it! I may switch it up a bit soon by buying a different Bobbi Brown formula, in the same shade, but it's going to take something pretty spectacular to steal me away from Alabaster.
  • 7-Benefit Playstick in Jax (discontinued). This was one of my first ever high end foundations, and I wore it religiously for about 2 years! The shade has unfortunately been discontinued, but I thought i'd include it as it was a pretty good match.
So those are the foundations i've got at the moment. It's amazing how different the palest shades from different brands are!
I'm not saying that any of these shades are bad, it's just unfortunately they're not quite pale enough for me. If anyone knows of any good pale foundations, please leave them in the comments! :)

Thankyou for reading, hope you are all well :)

  1. I have exactly the same problem! I had Nars Sheer Glow in Siberia which was pale enough but it was too yellowy for me. I have to mix almost every foundation I use with a white foundation - tres annoying! I get on well with Colorstay in Ivory though. Max Factor do a foundation in shade light ivory which is good for me too so you should check that one out! I think it's the Xperience one.

Definitely going to check Bobbi Brown out! xx

  2. Those last two look promising! Somebody recommended Make Up Forever Matt Velvet foundation in Alabaster to me and I'm trying to find a stockist in Ireland at the moment! Why can't regular pharmacy brands include us ghostly pale girls?!? Does my head in trying to find a foundation/powder that is pale enough for me.

  3. I have the same problem :(
I sometimes use L'oreal Infalliable in Porcelain, which is pretty pale, and I'm currently trying Estee Lauder Double Wear in Ecro.
Good luck, and please pass it on to us if you find your 'Pale Holy Grail' :P

  4. I'd like to see the Bobbi Brown one swatched! Mac girls don't know what they're chattin' about so I'd never trust them to match me up, and all of their foundations are too orange for me too. I use Colorstay, Illamasqua and currently the 17 BB Cream which matched me surprisingly ok. There are reviews on my blog if you needed any guidance. xx
p.s.- I used to LOVE jax!!! I wore it non stop until it was discontinued, such a shame!!

  5. Have you ever tried the elf Studio tinted moisturizers? They feel alot lighter than a foundation but definetly give coverage as good as a foundation!
    care to follow?
